Javi, last night I was cleaning my hamsters cage and when I put him back in I noticed something red near the end of his penis. I am not sure but I think it might have been blood. I could could get a closer look because I was holding him on his back and he was squirming but I am worried about this. Do you know what this means and is it serious?

Daniel: I'm not a vet, and even if I was, I wouldn't be able to give you a diagnostic without seeing your hamster. Take him to a vet. That's the best thing you can do.

Because I've had male hamsters before and there would be this red thing coming out of his penis area and then uh....some sperm will come out..
That's normal for male hamsters that's 'in heat'. But you might wanna take him to the vet just to be safe.

Yes, hammies have retractable penises like dogs and cats, and it is very bright red. You usually see it right after he's done some cleaning business down there. Sometimes it can pop out for a quick hello if you are holding them a certain way (i.e. if they're squirming). But if you do indeed think it's inflamed, by all means, take him to a vet..couldn't hurt. At the very least you'll leave the vet's office with an embarassed look on your face ;)
Which reminds me..
I work at Petsmart, and if I had a dollar for every phone call I got from concerned owners about the 'tumor' on their male hamster's butt..well, I wouldn't have to work anymore :)

I love the updates by Nana about her papa. I have a chinchilla who has a bigger ball and he loves to run around and bonk into everything too. I am his mama, his name is Pirate because he has a scar over his eye. Good luck with Luna and Nana! I will continue to check on them!

My son has a hamster, I think he is a Black Bear. Anyway, a few days ago we noticed a red tipped thingy retacking in and out from his bottom area. My first thought was that he is definately male, but I also noticed just yestreday that the area around it has become very swollen like and was wondering if maybe "he" is a "she" and was pregnant. Any thoughts????

i know how u feel ...my sisters hamster passed away...his name was squishy,hes a teddy bear hamster....know i learned more about hamsters about this book called
"how to raise mice,rats,gerbils,and hamsters" it tells me what they eat and what you can put in there cages....i hope that i could have another hamster
